Romantic Weekend in Venice – A Birthday Getaway

A romantic weekend in Venice is the kind of trip that feels like stepping into a film – gondolas gliding through narrow canals, soft sunsets above terracotta rooftops, and cosy trattorias where time slows. For Fran’s birthday, Venice gave us just the mix we were looking for: romance, atmosphere and a little adventure – all within 72 hours.

If you’re planning a couples’ escape, here’s how we spent our time and what we’d recommend.

Why a Romantic Weekend in Venice Works So Well for Couples ❤️

Venice is made for couples. You’ll find:

  • Winding laneways perfect for getting a little lost together
  • Atmospheric squares, cafés and serenaded bridges
  • World-class views without needing to go far
  • Plenty of corners away from the crowds

Day 1 — Arrival & First Impressions ⛵

Touching down in Venice is an experience in itself – especially when you travel into the city by private water taxi. The skyline slowly rises, the canals widen, and suddenly you’re gliding between palaces.

We checked into Hotel Rialto right in next to the famous bridge – cosy, compact, and surprisingly quiet once the shutters closed.

For dinner, we initially tried a restaurant right on the Grand Canal. The views? Unreal. The food? Not the best. We quickly learned that stepping away from the main tourist spots leads to much better meals – and often friendlier prices.

St Mark’s Square at sunset

We redeemed the evening with a gentle stroll through winding lanes, across charming bridges, and into St Mark’s Square. As the sun dipped behind the rooftops, live music drifted across the piazza. It was an enchanting introduction to Venice.

Day 2 — Views, Palaces & A Birthday Treat 🌇

We wandered the Rialto Market first thing – colourful, lively, and a great slice of real Venice before the crowds arrive.

Then we took a guided visit to Doge’s Palace, where grand halls and secret passageways reveal centuries of history.

Later, we soaked in one of Venice’s best views by climbing St Mark’s Campanile. The panoramic lookout over the lagoon and domed skyline at sunset was a definite highlight of our romantic weekend in Venice.

That evening, we celebrated Fran’s birthday at a small, family-run osteria. It was the perfect reminder that Venice’s most memorable meals are often far from the bustling squares.

Day 3 — Murano & Canal Moments 🎭

After a slow breakfast by the water, we caught a vaporetto to Murano to watch glassblowers at work. There’s something magical about seeing glowing glass become ornate art right before your eyes.

Later in the afternoon, we visited the iconic Hotel Danieli for a rooftop drink – watching the sun shimmer on the Grand Canal as gondolas drifted below.

Of course, we ended the weekend the classic way: a gondola ride beneath romantic bridges and quiet side canals. It was everything you hope for – calm, cinematic, and slightly surreal.

We ended the night with gelato in St Mark’s Square, listening to the bells echo across the piazza.
