Mauritius Honeymoon Experience: Our Honest Review of a Dreamy Island Escape
When we planned our honeymoon, we dreamt of sun-drenched beaches, soft sand beneath our feet, and days that ranged from lazy lounge to gentle adventure. Our honeymoon in Mauritius delivered just that – and more. In this post I share how we divided our stay between two very different resorts, what we loved (and what to watch out for), and essential tips for anyone thinking about a romantic getaway on this beautiful Indian Ocean island

Why We Chose Mauritius as Our Honeymoon Destination
We picked Mauritius because it offered a wonderful mix: luxury, nature, culture, and relaxation. The island promised turquoise lagoons, warm Indian Ocean waters, and a rich blend of Creole, African, Indian and European influences. For a honeymoon where we could slow down but still experience new places – Mauritius felt ideal.
Also, with relatively straightforward flights and good amenities, it ticked all our boxes. We weren’t looking for backpacker-style travel, but rather comfort, flexibility and a place to unwind together after the whirlwind of wedding planning.

Where We Stayed During Our Mauritius Honeymoon
We split our stay between two resorts – each offering a distinct vibe and set of experiences. That gave us variety while keeping the trip cohesive and balanced.
The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa (Northwest Coast)
We began our honeymoon at The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa, located on the relaxed northwest coast, inside a protected marine park. The calm lagoon, gentle sea breeze and tropical vegetation created a peaceful backdrop for our first days as newlyweds.
Our suite was comfortable and airy, and we loved returning from the beach or pool to soft sheets and quiet surroundings. Some favourite moments were walking barefoot on the sand during sunset and enjoying a seafood dinner with the sea breeze around us. If you’re after tranquillity, comfort and slow-paced days – this resort is ideal.

LUX* Belle Mare (East Coast — Vibrant & Stylish)
For the second half of our honeymoon, we moved to LUX Belle Mare* on the east coast. The atmosphere was completely different: lively, upbeat, with beachfront cocktails, poolside lounging, and occasional live music in the evenings.
LUX* had a youthful, stylish vibe that re-energised the trip. We enjoyed paddle-boarding on calm waters, sipping fresh coconut drinks under palm trees, and watching the sunrise from a beach lounger. For couples wanting a mix of relaxation and resort-style activity, LUX* Belle Mare added a fun contrast to the calm of Turtle Bay.

What Made Our Honeymoon Work – The Highlights
Lazy Beach Days & Lagoon Relaxation
Some of the best memories were born out of doing nothing much at all: slow breakfasts with sea views, a midday swim in calm waters, and evening dips under the stars. The sea was tranquil enough that we felt safe swimming or snorkelling close to shore.

Island Adventures Without Stress
We balanced beach time with a couple of relaxed excursions, which meant we returned home feeling refreshed rather than rushed. Our favourite day out was when we hired a private driver to explore the island at our own pace.
- We visited Port Louis, wandered through the markets, and did some shopping before stopping for street food and a coffee by the waterfront. It gave us a chance to experience another side of Mauritius – lively, colourful and full of everyday energy.
- We also enjoyed a trip to see the Seven Coloured Earth and Chamarel waterfall. The volcanic rock formations and lush greenery were striking, and it was a nice contrast to the coast.

Because we weren’t trying to cram too much into every day, the few excursions we did felt meaningful and enjoyable.
Food, Drinks & Evenings
Mauritius blends cultures beautifully in its cuisine. We enjoyed seafood grills, Creole dishes, fresh fruit and rum cocktails. Many evenings ended with a quiet dinner by the sea and a chilled drink.
Even though the vibe at LUX* was more lively, it was never overwhelming; just enough buzz to feel like a celebration without being crowded or stressful.
What We Learned & What You Should Know Before Your Mauritius Honeymoon
Here are a few things that helped us – and you might appreciate them too:
Travel light but smart: Reef-safe sunscreen, swim shoes (for rocky spots) and a light jacket for cooler evenings – these little things add comfort.
Don’t overbook yourself. When you’re freshly married, gentle days can mean more than a packed itinerary. We made space for rest.
Choose resort location wisely. The northwest coast (Westin) had calm lagoons and peaceful evenings. The east coast (LUX*) offered more activity and a more vibrant vibe. If sunsets are a priority, check orientation.
All-Inclusive can be worth it. For a few nights, knowing meals and drinks are covered removed decision fatigue and added relaxation. If you dine out a few times, it still felt like a treat.
Best season for honeymoon: May to December offers generally pleasant weather, good sea conditions and fewer storms.
