Donsol to El Nido Itinerary: Whale Sharks in Donsol 🌋

My trip began with a late-night flight from Hong Kong to Manila. After a quick hotel stop for some rest, I took a short flight to Legazpi – a region famous for its volcanoes, lush rice fields, and colourful towns. From here, we drove to Donsol, one of Southeast Asia’s top spots for ethical whale shark encounters.

After checking in at Giddy’s Place, a comfortable and simple hotel, I headed to the port. The tour felt a bit commercial with several boats heading out, but the moment I first spotted a whale shark made it all worth it.

I’ll never forget being slapped in the face by its massive tail – equal parts shocking and surreal. Despite the crowds, swimming alongside such a majestic animal was a true highlight of this Donsol to El Nido itinerary.

Evening Magic: Fireflies and Filipino Flavours ✨

Back at the hotel, I booked a peaceful evening firefly tour – gliding along quiet mangroves as thousands of fireflies flickered like stars around us.

Dinner afterwards introduced our little tour group to bold Filipino flavours. If you can, try:

The next day was perfectly laid-back – snorkelling over vibrant reefs, reading on the beach, and enjoying the unhurried island lifestyle. Donsol is the ideal place to slow down before continuing deeper into the Philippines.

Boracay Bliss: Sunsets & Soft Sands 🏝️

Soon it was time to begin the next stage of this Donsol to El Nido itinerary. After a flight to Caticlan and a short boat transfer, I arrived at Sea Wind Resort in Boracay – a serene beachfront stay with warm hospitality and great food.

Days here were spent swimming, exploring by moped, and letting the sunsets take centre stage. Yes, Boracay is touristy – but it’s also breath-taking. The combination of powdery sand and turquoise water is hard to beat.

While Boracay is undeniably touristy, it’s easy to see why. The sunsets here are truly otherworldly, and the island exudes a friendly, welcoming vibe that’s hard to resist.

Manila Transit: Chaos & Contrast ✈️

Returning to Manila brought me back into city reality. Terminal changes and traffic can be intense – so leave at least 3 hours between connecting flights if you need to switch terminals.

Donsol to El Nido Itinerary: Palawan & El Nido Adventures 🌴

Arriving in Puerto Princesa, I took a pre-arranged six-hour van transfer to El Nido – a bumpy yet scenic journey through tropical interior landscapes.

In El Nido, I stayed at Caalan Resort, a peaceful, ocean-facing, and still walkable to town. From here joined the popular Tour A, visiting:

• Big Lagoon
• Secret Lagoon
• Shimizu Island
• Commando Beach

This was one of the top highlights of the Donsol to El Nido itinerary – dramatic limestone cliffs, colourful coral, and the kind of clear blue water you daydream about.
