A Journey Through India’s Golden Triangle: A First-Time Visitor’s Experience
India’s Golden Triangle had always fascinated me with its colours, chaos, and culture. For my first visit, I joined an organised tour through Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur to ease into the experience. As someone who thrives in calm and nature, India’s raw energy felt daunting at first. However, this Golden Triangle India journey turned out to be the perfect introduction – a blend of adventure, heritage, and discovery.

Starting in Delhi – Culture Shock Meets Comfort

My journey began at Delhi Airport, which I found modern, efficient, and far less overwhelming than I expected – especially compared to Mumbai, which I’ve heard is more hectic.
I stayed at Hotel Southgate, a clean and contemporary place well-located for exploring the city. Playing it safe on my first night, I stuck to room service before meeting the rest of the tour group the next day.
After formal introductions over lunch, we headed straight into Old Delhi – a baptism by fire. We visited a local temple and took a rickshaw ride through impossibly packed streets, alive with sound, movement, and colour. Unknowingly, I had arrived during Diwali, India’s festival of lights, adding even more energy to the city. That evening, we visited India Gate, beautifully lit as darkness fell. Delhi had made its mark.

Agra and the Taj Mahal – A Golden Triangle Highlight
The next morning, an early start saw us on the road to Agra. Our original plan was to travel by train, but due to Diwali-related disruptions, we switched to a coach. After lunch and checking into the hotel, we visited Agra Fort – a massive, majestic structure packed with rich Mughal history. From its walls, you can glimpse the silhouette of the Taj Mahal in the distance, and anticipation builds.

Finally, we made our way to the Taj itself. Seeing it for the first time was surreal. I’d spent my childhood gazing at it in travel books, and it didn’t disappoint. The late afternoon light cast a soft glow, enhancing its beauty – but the crowds were overwhelming. It wasn’t easy to find a quiet moment, but the sheer wonder of the place made up for it.
Wildlife Encounters on a Golden Triangle India Tour
The following morning, we visited Fatehpur Sikri, a fascinating abandoned city with exquisite Mughal architecture. That afternoon, we boarded an Indian train bound for Ranthambore National Park. While technically “first class,” it was still a wild ride – but part of the fun.
Arriving in the evening, we were welcomed at our lodge just outside the park with dancing, Kingfisher beers, and a lively atmosphere.
We set off early the next day on safari in open-top jeeps. Though I narrowly missed seeing a tiger (those in the front seats caught a brief glimpse), knowing one was close enough to stir the dust made the hair on my arms stand up. We did see sambar deer, crocodiles, owls, wild boar, and – of course – monkeys everywhere

In the afternoon, we returned to the park for another drive. Again, no tiger for me, but the atmosphere and biodiversity were more than enough.
Jaipur – The Pink City’s Regal Charm
Before leaving Ranthambore, we visited a local school supported by the tour company. The children sang “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and their warm smiles made the visit truly special.

Then came one of the most chaotic train rides of my life. Our guide fought his way through crowds to secure seats – thoroughly Indian and unforgettable.
We arrived in Jaipur, where we stayed in a former royal palace, now a beautifully refurbished hotel. The next day brought a tour of the City Palace and the Royal Observatory, where we learned how ancient astronomers told the time using shadows.
An afternoon at the pool was a welcome chance to unwind. The next morning, we visited Amber Fort, perched on a hilltop with dramatic walls stretching into the distance. Many opted for the popular elephant ride, but I chose the jeep out of respect for the animals.

The fort reminded me of a mini version of the Great Wall of China—impressive and vast. Jaipur left a real impression, and I’d love to return and explore more at a slower pace.
Rajasthan’s Rural Tranquility
Next, we travelled to rural Rajasthan, staying in beautiful heritage-style accommodation surrounded by serenity. I don’t remember the exact location, but it felt like the middle of nowhere-in the best way.
Unfortunately, this is where I was hit by Delhi Belly and spent most of the night and following morning curled up in bed. Luckily, it passed quickly.

Unfortunately, this is where I was hit by Delhi Belly and spent much of the night and following morning curled up in bed – a fairly common rite of passage for travellers in India!
We continued on to Surajgarh, staying in another elegant converted palace-fort. These heritage hotels added something truly special to the journey – an old-world atmosphere contrasting beautifully with India’s vibrant cities. That evening, we enjoyed more dancing and performances from local children. The hotel owner, complete with Stetson hat, handed out rupees with theatrical flair. Surreal, but undeniably fun.

Back to Delhi and Final Thoughts
On our last day, we journeyed back to Delhi for a final meal – a traditional Goan feast. Sadly, it wasn’t to my taste, but that didn’t take away from the experience.
Ultimately, my Golden Triangle India adventure captured everything I’d imagined and more. From the majesty of the Taj Mahal to Jaipur’s regal charm and the warmth of local people, it offered a window into India’s soul. It proved that even first-time visitors can find comfort amid the chaos — and endless beauty in between.
